How to add transitions

Put a dissolve, dip, push, slide, wipe, zoom or blur on any cut.

Steps

  1. Open the Transitions tab. Hover a style to preview it.
  2. Drag a style onto a cut in the timeline, or click a cut and then click a style.
  3. Choose a direction for push, slide and wipe, and drag the transition's edge on the timeline to change its length.
  4. Play across the cut to check it.

To remove one, right-click the transition on the timeline and choose Remove, or select None (cut).

With chat

  • "Add a quick dissolve between every clip."
  • "Use a dip to black before the final shot."

Why a transition is greyed out

A transition overlaps the two clips, so it needs extra footage on both sides of the cut. If a clip starts at the very beginning of its source file, there's nothing to overlap. The panel tells you how to fix it, for example "Trim the start of the second clip to leave footage before the cut."
