How to add captions to a video

Turn on word-timed captions for any speech in your edit.

Steps

  1. Open the Captions tab and choose Style.
  2. Under Caption speech from, tick the audio you want captioned, for example Video clips' sound. If your edit has separate audio lanes (a voiceover, a second mic), each one has its own checkbox.
  3. Novacut generates word-timed captions from the transcript in a few seconds.
  4. Pick a preset, a position and colors.
  5. Press play. Captions show in the preview and are burned into your MP4.

With chat

  • "Add bold captions."
  • "Caption the voiceover but not the interview audio."

Export behavior

  • MP4: captions are burned in by default. On the Export tab, set Captions to Separate .srt to get a clean video plus a subtitle file.
  • SRT or TXT: download them from Script captions on the Export tab.
  • Final Cut Pro: native captions. DaVinci Resolve: styled titles plus an SRT. Premiere Pro: an SRT to import as a caption track.
