How long should a highlight video be?

Updated

A highlight video should be as short as its audience allows: 15–30 seconds for Instagram, TikTok and Facebook, 1–3 minutes for a team party or banquet, 2–5 minutes for a YouTube season recap, and 3–5 minutes for a college recruiting video, with the best plays in the first minute. If people stop watching before the end, it's too long. Here's the guide by audience, why shorter usually wins, and how to cut to an exact length.

Length by audience

Why shorter usually wins

  • People decide within seconds whether to keep watching. Open on a great play, not warm-ups.
  • A 45-second video watched twice beats a 5-minute one abandoned at 0:40.
  • Recruiting coaches receive many videos. If the first minute doesn't show what the athlete can do, they move on.

How many clips fit?

At 120 BPM, cutting every 4 beats gives 2-second shots: about 15 clips in 30 seconds, 45 clips in 90 seconds. Action clips can be shorter; celebrations and slow motion longer.

Cutting to an exact length

21 phone clips became a youth soccer season highlight, then one message added a crest, slow motion and a stadium anthem. Sped up. Phone-size version.

We asked Novacut for 45 seconds and got exactly 45, with every cut on the beat; then a 30-second vertical version for social:
