How to edit videos for Instagram Reels (9:16, no bars)
To edit a video for Instagram Reels, make it vertical 9:16 (1080×1920), keep it under 3 minutes (most work best at 15–30 seconds), open on the strongest moment, reframe any horizontal footage so every shot fills the frame, and keep text and logos out of the bottom and right edges where Instagram's caption and buttons sit. If you post as a business account, use music you're licensed to use. Here's each step, and three Reels we made from horizontal footage.
Instagram Reels specs
| Setting | Use |
|---|---|
| Aspect ratio | 9:16 vertical |
| Resolution | 1080×1920 |
| Length | Up to 3 minutes (since January 2025); 15–30 seconds is the sweet spot for most |
| Frame rate | Match your footage (usually 30 fps) |
| Text placement | Middle of the frame; avoid the bottom fifth and right edge |
1. Pick 15–30 seconds that hook immediately
Open on the best moment: the goal, the reveal, the punchline, the kitchen. Viewers decide in the first second whether to keep scrolling.
2. Reframe horizontal footage properly
A 16:9 shot needs about 3.16× zoom to fill a 9:16 frame. At that zoom you only see the middle third of the original, so:
- Center each shot on its subject, not the middle of the frame.
- Check every shot. In fast action the subject moves; a crop that's centered at the start of a kick can end on empty grass. Reframe those shots on the ball or the player, or swap them out.
- Never letterbox (black bars). It looks like a repost.
3. Keep text in the safe zone
Instagram's caption, username and buttons cover the bottom and right side. Keep text in the middle and upper part of the frame. Novacut moved a logo from bottom-right to top-right for exactly this reason in our listing Reel.
4. Captions and music
- Captions: many people watch with the sound off. Use big, bold captions, 2–4 words at a time. How →
- Music: personal accounts can use Instagram's music library. Business accounts are limited to commercially cleared music, so use licensed library music or music made for your video.

FAQ
How long can an Instagram Reel be?
Up to 3 minutes since January 2025 (rollout varied by account at first). Short Reels of 15–30 seconds tend to get watched to the end.
Why does my Reel have black bars?
The footage was fit inside the 9:16 frame instead of filling it. Zoom about 3.16× (from 16:9) and center each shot on the subject.
Can I use popular songs in Reels?
Personal accounts can use songs from Instagram's library within the app. Business accounts are limited to commercially licensed music. Music added in an editor outside Instagram must be licensed for your use.
What resolution should I export for Reels?
1080×1920 (9:16), H.264 MP4, at your footage's frame rate.
