How to make a sports highlight video from phone clips
To make a sports highlight video, collect every clip from the season (yours and other parents'), decide who it's for and how long it should be, pick the best plays and celebrations, cut them to the beat of an upbeat track, open with a title and end on the team, then make a 15–30 second vertical version for social. Slow motion on one or two big moments makes it feel like a broadcast. Below is each step and a real example: 21 phone clips of a youth soccer team.
21 phone clips became a youth soccer season highlight, then one message added a crest, slow motion and a stadium anthem. Sped up. Phone-size version.
1. Collect every clip
Ask the other parents to share theirs in one shared folder: originals, not videos forwarded through chat apps (which compress them). More angles mean more good moments. Don't trim anything first.
2. Decide who it's for
| Video | Length | What goes in |
|---|---|---|
| Social post (Instagram, Facebook) | 15–30 s, vertical | 3–4 best moments |
| Team party or banquet | 1–3 min | Every kid, best plays, celebrations |
| YouTube season recap | 2–5 min | Game-by-game or best-of |
| Single player / recruiting | 3–5 min | One player's best plays, best first |
3. Pick the plays
- Goals and near misses, with the build-up.
- Saves, tackles, great passes.
- Celebrations, huddles, the bench reacting.
- Every player at least once for a team video. Parents notice.
4. Cut to music
Pick an upbeat, licensed track around 120–140 BPM and put cuts on the beat; land your best play on the drop. Music guide →
5. Add polish
- A title card with team name, season and crest.
- Slow motion with a speed ramp on one or two big moments. Slow motion tips →
- A stat card ("12 games · 31 goals").
- An ending on the team and a thank-you to coaches and parents.
6. Make the vertical version
Reframe each shot for 9:16 so the kids and the ball stay in frame, and keep text away from the bottom where Instagram puts its buttons.
What we did with 21 clips
We uploaded 21 clips and wrote:
Make a 45-second highlight video of our U10 soccer team's season for the end-of-season party. Open on a title card "Lions U10 · 2026 season", then the best runs, shots, saves and celebrations, cut to the beat of an upbeat track from the music library. Use each clip once, and end on the team walking off the field with "Thanks for an amazing season, coaches and parents".
Novacut built the 45-second video with every clip used once, on the downbeats of a 125 BPM library track, ending on the team walking across the pitch with the thank-you line. It also flagged what only a parent would know: the footage showed kids in blue, teal and red kits, so we should check every child in the cut was a Lion. Then one more message made it look like a broadcast:
Make this highlight video more impressive, like a sports broadcast: Design a team crest for the Lions: a navy and gold shield with a lion's head and "LIONS U10". Put it big on the title card, small in the top-right corner for the whole video, and big again at the end. Slow down the best moments: the strongest kick and the biggest celebration at half speed, with a quick speed ramp in and out. Swap the music for a bigger sports anthem from the library with a build-up and a drop, and land the drop on the first big kick. Add a stat card over a team shot: "12 GAMES · 31 GOALS · 1 TEAM". End on a freeze frame of the team walking off, with the crest and "THANKS COACHES & PARENTS" in big bold type across the frame. Keep it about 45 seconds and 16:9.
Then the version for parents to post: "Make a 30-second vertical version for parents to post on Instagram and Facebook." Novacut reframed each shot for 9:16 and moved the stat card and closing line to fit the tall frame.
Tips for better highlight footage
- Film horizontally, and start recording before the play starts.
- Get close to celebrations. They're the best part of a youth video.
- Film the team photo and the huddle. They make the best first and last shots.
