Music for sports highlight videos: what to use
Good music for a sports highlight video is upbeat (around 120–140 BPM for action), has a clear build-up and drop you can land your best play on, and is licensed for where you'll post it, because Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and YouTube often mute or block videos with popular songs. For recruiting videos, keep music low or skip it. Here's what fits each kind of video, where to get it, and how to cut to it.
What fits
| Video | Style | Tempo |
|---|---|---|
| Youth team season | Upbeat, celebratory pop or electronic | 115–130 BPM |
| Competitive highlights | Driving hip-hop, rock or electronic | 85–100 or 130–150 BPM |
| Senior night, banquet | Emotional build: piano or strings into drums | 70–100 BPM |
| Recruiting video | Low and steady, or none | Anything quiet |
How long the video runs changes the music choice too: highlight video length.
Where to get music you can post
- Your editor's music library (check the license covers your use).
- YouTube Audio Library: free for YouTube videos; some tracks need attribution.
- Royalty-free subscription libraries licensed for social media.
- In-app libraries on Instagram and TikTok when posting from a personal account (business accounts are limited to commercially licensed sounds).
Popular songs (licensing basics) are the usual cause of muted or blocked highlight videos. Credit in the description doesn't make them licensed.
Cut on the beat
21 phone clips became a youth soccer season highlight, then one message added a crest, slow motion and a stadium anthem. Sped up. Phone-size version.
We first asked for "an upbeat track from the music library". Novacut chose "Euphoric Celebration / Hands in the Air" at 125 BPM and put every cut on one of its downbeats. Then we asked for "a bigger sports anthem from the library with a build-up and a drop, and land the drop on the first big kick". It swapped in "Rock Anthem / Stadium Riff" and started it 86 seconds into the track so the drop falls on the first big kick, 4.7 seconds into the video. Cutting to the beat by hand →
FAQ
What are good songs for a sports highlight video?
Choose by feel rather than a specific hit: an upbeat track with a build and a drop around 120–140 BPM. Licensed library tracks avoid muted videos.
Why was my highlight video muted on Instagram or YouTube?
It almost certainly contained copyrighted music detected by the platform. Replace it with licensed music and re-upload.
Should a recruiting video have music?
Optional and quiet. Coaches often watch with the sound off; loud music can distract.
How loud should the music be?
With no speech, as loud as you like without clipping. Under speech (a coach's interview, a voiceover), about 20 dB below the voice.
