How to combine videos into one that flows

Updated

To combine videos, add the clips to one timeline in a video editor (iMovie on iPhone and Mac, Clipchamp on Windows, CapCut on Android), put them in order, trim each one, and export a single file. Putting clips end to end takes a minute; making them flow takes more: choose the best few seconds of each clip, set an order with a beginning and end, and cut to the music. Here's how to do both, with a 21-clip example.

Combine clips with free built-in apps

DeviceAppHow
iPhone / iPadiMovie (free)Start New Project → Movie → select clips → Create Movie → reorder and trim → Done → share/save
AndroidCapCut (free)New project → select clips in order → Add → trim and reorder → Export
Windows 11Clipchamp (preinstalled)Import clips → drag them onto the timeline → reorder → Export
MaciMovie (free)New Movie → drag clips into the timeline → File → Share → File

Make sure the clips share a shape (all 16:9 or all 9:16), or the editor will add bars to the odd ones out.

Make it flow, not a slideshow of clips

  1. Use the best part of each clip. 2–4 seconds is often enough for action shots.
  2. Order with intent: chronological for events, story order for a trip, best-first for social.
  3. Open and close strongly: a title or the best moment first, a closing shot that feels like an ending.
  4. Cut on the beat if there's music. Trim each clip first: trimming basics.
  5. Use each clip once. Repeats feel like padding.

21 clips, combined

21 phone clips became a youth soccer season highlight, then one message added a crest, slow motion and a stadium anthem. Sped up. Phone-size version.

What Novacut did with 21 clips:

  • Used each clip once, choosing its best few seconds.
  • Put every cut on a downbeat of the music (how to cut to music).
  • Opened on a title card and ended on a thank-you line.
  • Held the best moments longer, and slowed two down.

FAQ

Can I combine videos without losing quality?

Yes. Export at the same resolution and frame rate as your clips (for phone video, usually 1080p or 4K at 30 fps).

How do I combine vertical and horizontal videos?

Pick one output shape, then reframe the others to fill it (zoom and center on the subject) instead of adding black bars. Reframing for 9:16 →

What's the easiest way to combine clips with music?

Add the music first, then cut the clips to its beat, or let an editor do it. Video with music →

How many clips can I combine?

As many as you have. Our example used 21; event and season videos often use 50+. More clips just means more choosing.
