Wedding highlight video: what it is and how to make one
A wedding highlight video is a short film, usually 3–5 minutes, that tells the story of the day set to music: the walk down the aisle, the vows, the rings, the kiss, the walk out and the best of the reception, often with lines from the vows or toasts layered in. It's the video couples rewatch and share; the full ceremony and speeches are separate, longer edits. Here's the structure, the choices that make it feel cinematic, and a 60-second highlight made from ceremony footage.
Highlight film vs. other wedding videos
| Video | Length | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Teaser / trailer | 30–90 s | Social media, shared within days |
| Highlight film | 3–5 min | The story of the day, to rewatch and share |
| Feature or documentary film | 10–60 min | Most of the day, with speeches and vows |
| Ceremony / speeches edits | Full length | Every word, multiple angles |
Structure that works
- Open with a detail or a voice: a line from the vows over the venue, or the dress, the rings, the invitation.
- Build through getting ready and the aisle.
- Peak at the vows, rings and kiss, with slow motion on one or two moments.
- Release into the walk out and the party: first dance, toasts, dancing.
- Close on the couple, and a title card with names and date.
Choices that make it feel cinematic
- One soft, warm color look across every clip.
- Music with a build, licensed for where it will be shared; cut on the beat in the party section.
- Slow motion on 2–3 moments (rings, kiss, first dance), not everywhere. Slow motion →
- An elegant title card: names in a serif, the date small and widely spaced.
How we made a 60-second highlight
12 ceremony clips became a 60-second wedding film, then a vertical teaser. Sped up. Phone-size version.
Make a 60-second wedding highlight film from the ceremony in story order: the walk down the aisle, the vows, the rings, the kiss, the walk out. Warm, romantic music from the library, gentle slow motion on the rings and the kiss, soft film-like color, and an elegant serif title card "Emma & James · June 14, 2026".
From 12 clips, Novacut built the film in about two minutes, then made the title larger and more elegant on request. Full walkthrough →

Should a highlight video include the vows?
Ideally, yes: a few lines of the couple's own words make it personal. You need clean audio of the vows for this.
