What is a rough cut in video editing?

Updated

A rough cut is the first version of an edit where the story works: the right moments, in the right order, at roughly the right length. It isn't polished. Color, sound mixing, graphics and frame-accurate trims come later, in the fine cut. The point of a rough cut is to answer "does this work?" before spending time on finishing. Here's how it fits into the editing stages, what goes into one, and how to get one from raw footage quickly.

The stages of an edit

StageWhat it isThe question it answers
AssemblyEvery usable take, in script or shoot order"What do we have?"
Rough cutThe story with the best takes, roughly timed"Does it work?"
Fine cutTight timing, final takes chosen"Is every second earning its place?"
Picture lockNo more picture changes"Ready for color and sound?"

What goes into a rough cut

  • The best take of each moment, not every take.
  • The structure: beginning, middle, end, in a deliberate order.
  • Approximate length, usually 10–30% longer than the final.
  • Temp music and titles, if they help judge pacing.

What doesn't: color correction, final sound mix, polished graphics.

How to review a rough cut

Watch it once without stopping. Note where your attention drifts (too long), where you're confused (missing context), and where you want more (a moment worth expanding). Fix structure first, timing second.

Making a rough cut from raw footage

The slow part is watching the footage and choosing takes: at least the length of the footage by hand. We described the video instead:

19 minutes of interviews became an 87-second YouTube video. Sped up. Phone-size version.

Novacut picked 11 answers from 19 minutes and put them in a story order. That's a rough cut. With captions and a title card it was close to a fine cut too.

Finishing the rough cut in your editor

Export the timeline to Premiere Pro (EDL), DaVinci Resolve or Final Cut Pro (FCPXML) and relink to your original files. You start from the story instead of raw footage. How →

FAQ

How long should a rough cut be?

Usually 10–30% longer than the final target, so there's room to tighten. For a 3-minute video, a 3½–4-minute rough cut is normal.

What's the difference between a rough cut and a first cut?

People use them interchangeably. Strictly, the first cut is the editor's first complete version; it's usually a rough cut.

Who sees the rough cut?

The director, client or creator. Its job is to agree on structure before finishing work starts.

Can AI make a rough cut?

Yes. Choosing and ordering takes from a description is exactly what an AI editor does well. How AI editing works →
