How to make a graduation video or slideshow
A graduation video usually takes one of two forms: a ceremony highlight (the walk, the diploma, the cap toss, the hugs, cut to uplifting music in about a minute) or a growing-up slideshow for the party (photos and clips from kindergarten to cap and gown, three to five minutes on the big screen). For either, gather every photo and clip from family and friends, keep the best moments in order, set them to music you're allowed to use, slow down the cap toss, and finish on a line like "So proud of you". Below is how to plan both, and a real ceremony turned into a 60-second graduation video.
31 clips from a graduation ceremony became a 30-second vertical graduation video with titles, music and a slowed-down cap toss. Sped up. Phone-size version.
Which graduation video are you making?
| Video | Footage | Length | Where it plays |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ceremony highlight | Clips from the day | 45–90 s | Shared with family that night, Instagram |
| Growing-up slideshow | Photos and clips from every year | 3–5 min | Graduation party screen |
| Class or team video | Clips from the whole year | 2–4 min | Senior night, banquet, last day of school |
| Vertical cut | The best 3–4 moments | 15–30 s | Reels, TikTok, Stories |
The ceremony highlight
Film (or collect) the processional, the name being called, the walk across the stage, the diploma, the cap toss, hugs with friends, and photos with family. Then:
- Open on a title card: "Congratulations, Class of 2026", or the graduate's name.
- Keep the moments in order; cut the speeches down to one line, or leave them out.
- Slow down the cap toss to half speed. It's the peak. Slow motion →
- End on a family photo and "So proud of you".
The growing-up slideshow
- Collect one or two photos per school year, plus a few short clips (first day of school, a recital, a game).
- Go in order: kindergarten to senior year, with the year or grade as a small caption.
- About 5 seconds per photo, soft transitions, gentle zooms.
- Finish with this year: cap and gown, the ceremony, the friends.
- Two songs usually cover a 4-minute slideshow: something nostalgic, then something upbeat for the final year.
Music that fits
Uplifting, building tracks work best. Use music licensed for where you'll post: classic graduation songs are copyrighted and get videos muted online, though playing them at a private party is a different matter from posting. Music basics →
The example: a ceremony in 30 seconds
We uploaded 31 clips from a graduation ceremony, a mix of horizontal and vertical phone footage, and asked:
Make a 60-second graduation video for the family. Open on an elegant title card "Congratulations, Class of 2026", then the ceremony, the cap toss, hugs and photos with family, in order, cut to an uplifting track from the music library. Slow down the cap toss. End on "So proud of you".
The first cut ran in order: the title card, a graduate receiving his diploma, the class under falling confetti, the cap toss at half speed, classmates hugging, diploma photos, and the closing card, on an upbeat library track tagged for graduation montages ("Euphoric Celebration / Victory Light", 125 BPM).
Then the version families share: "Make a 30-second vertical version for Instagram and TikTok." The vertical phone clips went in full frame and the horizontal ones got their own crop on the people. One more message set both titles large across the frame and swapped a long, static shot for the confetti toss and a second hug, so no shot runs longer than four seconds:
FAQ
How long should a graduation slideshow be?
3–5 minutes for a party screen (roughly 40–60 photos at 5 seconds each); 45–90 seconds for a ceremony highlight; 15–30 seconds for social.
What's a good graduation video maker?
For a slideshow of a few photos, a template app is enough. For a ceremony and party filmed by several people, an editor that picks the moments and cuts them to music saves the most time. Making a video with music →
How do I make a graduation video for a whole class?
Ask every family to add clips and photos to one shared folder, set a deadline a week before the event, and make sure every graduate appears at least once. Put names on screen if you can.
Can I play copyrighted songs at a graduation party?
Playing music at a private party is generally fine. Posting the video online with that song usually isn't: platforms detect it and mute or block the video. Use licensed or generated music for the version you post.
