GoPro video editing: from hours of footage to a highlight
Editing GoPro footage is mostly a search problem: a day on the bike, board or trail gives you hours of point-of-view video in which the good moments add up to a minute. Copy everything off the card, find the moments (the fastest descent, the near miss, the view at the top), cut them to a driving track, slow down one or two, and keep the final video to 30–60 seconds, plus a vertical version. Below is how the main GoPro editing options compare, a workflow that works with any of them, and a real day of mountain biking cut into a 45-second highlight.
26 GoPro clips from a day of mountain biking became a 45-second highlight with a title, music and slow motion. Sped up. Phone-size version.
GoPro editing software compared
| Option | Best for | Finding the moments | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| GoPro Quik app | Quick edits on your phone, auto "highlight" videos | HiLight tags you press while filming, plus auto picks | Free; extra features with a GoPro subscription |
| DaVinci Resolve | Full control, color grading, free | By hand | Free; Studio is a one-time purchase |
| Premiere Pro / Final Cut Pro | Pro workflows | By hand | Subscription / one-time (Mac) |
| CapCut | Short social edits | By hand, templates | Free with paid tiers |
| Novacut | Hours of footage turned into a highlight by describing it | Watches every clip and picks from your description | $20–200/month after a free trial |
If you only want a 15-second clip of one run, Quik on your phone is fine. If you have a day or a whole trip of footage, the time goes into watching it, and that's where the tools differ.
A workflow that works
- Copy everything off the card, untrimmed. GoPro splits long recordings into ~4 GB chapter files; keep them all.
- Decide the length and shape: 30–60 seconds for a highlight, 15–30 seconds vertical for Reels and TikTok, 3–5 minutes for a full trip film on YouTube.
- Find the moments: speed, close calls, landings, other riders passing, the view at the top, the crew celebrating. Skip the long climbs and the straight fire roads.
- Build a shape: the ride out, the build, the fastest section, the payoff view.
- Cut on the beat of a driving instrumental, 120–140 BPM. Cutting to music →
- Slow down one or two moments at half speed with a ramp. Shoot at 60 fps or higher if you plan to. Slow motion →
- Fix the look: level horizons, match color between clips, and use a stabilized source (HyperSmooth) so it doesn't need heavy correction.
- Make the vertical version for Reels and TikTok with each shot reframed on the trail or the rider.
Settings that make editing easier
- 4K or 2.7K at 60 fps gives you room to crop and to slow down to half speed smoothly.
- HyperSmooth on, horizon leveling on if your model has it.
- Mount variety: chest, helmet, handlebar, and a few third-person clips of your friends make a POV video far less repetitive.
- Press HiLight (or say "GoPro, HiLight") after a great moment so you can find it later in Quik.
The example: a day on the slickrock
We uploaded 26 GoPro clips from a mountain bike ride in Moab, about nine minutes of handlebar and chest-mount footage, and wrote:
This is a whole day of GoPro footage from a mountain bike ride in Moab. Turn it into a 45-second highlight video. Open with a bold title "Moab · Slickrock" over the first wide view, start with the ride out, build to the fastest descents, and end on the best view. Cut to the beat of a driving instrumental from the music library, and slow down the steepest descent to half speed with a quick ramp in and out. Every shot must fill the 16:9 frame.
About two minutes later the cut was on the timeline: the title over a wide shot of the lead rider on the slickrock, calmer trail shots for the ride out, quicker cuts building into the descents, the steepest sandy drop slowed to half speed with ramps, and the red canyon wall to finish, all on a 125 BPM track from the library ("Action Sports / Downhill Charge"). Novacut also said where to look: after the slow-motion shot, the later cuts sit a beat off the grid, and it offered to re-time them.
Then "Make a 30-second vertical version for Instagram Reels and TikTok." Novacut dropped eight shots, gave the other 14 their own crop on the rider or the trail, and set the title large in the middle.
FAQ
What's the best software to edit GoPro videos?
GoPro Quik for fast phone edits, DaVinci Resolve for free full control, Premiere or Final Cut if you already use them, and an AI editor like Novacut when you have hours of footage and want the moments found for you.
How do I edit GoPro videos on a PC or Mac?
Copy the files from the SD card (or via the Quik desktop app), then open them in any editor that handles H.265/HEVC. Browser editors like Novacut run on any recent Mac or PC in Chrome, Edge or Brave and render on their servers, so 4K footage doesn't need a powerful computer. Mac and Windows editors →
How long should a GoPro edit be?
30–60 seconds for a highlight, 15–30 seconds for social, 3–5 minutes for a full trip film. Most POV footage is repetitive; shorter is better.
Why does my GoPro footage look shaky or distorted?
Turn on HyperSmooth when filming, use a linear lens mode if the fisheye bothers you, and choose clips from your steadiest mount. Stabilization in the editor can help, but it crops the picture.
