AI video editor for YouTube: what it should do for you
An AI video editor for YouTube should take a raw recording and return a video you'd actually upload: the best moments chosen, pauses and repeats cut, captions and a title card added, plus the title, description, chapters and a vertical Short. Your job shrinks to deciding what the video is about and checking the result: the hook, the names in the captions and the chapter list. Below is what to expect at each step, using a real 19-minute recording.
What the AI should handle
| Step | By hand | What a good AI editor does |
|---|---|---|
| Find the best moments | Watch everything, take notes | Transcribes and watches on upload; picks from your brief |
| Jump cuts | Trim every pause | Cuts pauses and repeats |
| Captions | Transcribe, time, style | Word-timed captions, styled |
| Title card / hook | Design in a separate tool | One sentence |
| Title, description, chapters | Write from memory of the edit | Written from the actual cut |
| Short | Re-edit in 9:16 | Picks a moment and reframes |
A real example
19 minutes of interviews became an 87-second YouTube video. Sped up. Phone-size version.
| What we typed | What Novacut did |
|---|---|
| "Turn it into a 90-second YouTube video… tight jump cuts, captions, and a bold title card." | Picked 11 answers, cut the interviewers, 87 seconds with captions |
| "Write a YouTube title, a short description and chapters." | Title, description and chapters matched to the cut |
| "Make a 45-second vertical YouTube Short from the same edit." | Nine answers in 42 seconds, reframed for 9:16 |
What you should still check
- The hook. Is the first line the strongest one? Ask for a different opener if not.
- Chapters. YouTube ignores a chapter list if any chapter runs under 10 seconds. Chapter rules →
- Filler words. An "um" that can't be cut without clipping the next word is better left in. Novacut tells you which ones it kept.
- Names in the captions. Transcription misspells unusual names; fix each one once.
How to write a brief the AI can follow
Include who it's for, the topic, the target length, the style (jump cuts, music or not) and the must-haves (title card, captions, a specific moment). One paragraph is enough. More examples →
FAQ
Can AI edit a whole YouTube video for me?
It can make an upload-ready first cut with captions, titles and chapters. Most creators still review it and make a few changes by asking: "drop the third answer", "start on the cave line".
Will AI editing make my videos look generic?
Not if you give it a specific brief. The AI chooses from your footage; the style comes from what you ask for and your recording.
Does YouTube penalize AI-edited videos?
No. Editing tools don't matter to YouTube. What matters is whether viewers watch and enjoy the video.
Can I export to Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve?
Yes. Novacut exports the timeline for Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve and Final Cut. How →
Demo footage: NASA interviews with astronaut Jeanette Epps (public domain). NASA does not endorse Novacut.
